After reading my own blog, I realized that it is a healthy release for me in dealing with my emotions concerning my cousin's death. However, I do have a lot of things for which to be thankful.
When I returned on Thursday the first kid I saw in the hallway exclaimed, "Miss Woodard, you're back."It made my day. He's usually a pretty quiet kid in class, so I was a little shocked that he said that. My kids were great. I just felt as though I couldn't really allow myself to feel in front of them. I couldn't break down and that was hard.
Today, I woke up and I felt a lot better than I have in the last week. I'm still dealing with a lot of emotions and confusion, but things are better. I still have that guilt of moving on. I still want time to stand still and for him to be here.
Murad started a new job today and he absolutely loves it, so there is a positive.
There are only four months and six days until I am Mrs. Campbell. I feel a little behind. I need to start making the invitations NOW. I need to have them done by the end of this month. I'm not hiring a calligrapher (it just seems like a waste in my eyes because people throw away envelopes), so I have to hand address each envelope. I'm imagining that will take me a month and a half. I'd like for the invites to go out in early to mid January, so that i can have an end of February response deadline. I'm making menus (because they're fun) for the wedding and I need to know exactly how many people are coming. Murad and I ordered the most food possible for the wedding, so that if a high number of people show up we can cut back on some of the appetizers. My parents are paying for the food, so we need to keep that cost down (the shrimp is the first to go...sorry, Murad). I'm also making a seating chart (they're not fun).
On the East coast they do things very formally. Sit down dinners, open bar, seating charts, and menus are the norm. I'm used to buffet and beer Midwest weddings. So we compromised, but it seems like Murad got more out of it than I did: buffet, seating chart, open bar, menu.... . AND Murad doesn't even drink! However, on both sides of our family a traditional wedding is not always the norm. In my family and in the Lutheran church, we usually have the Lutheran church wedding with cake and punch in the church basement. We're Lutheran and that's just how we do things. My parents had a more traditional wedding with a church wedding and then dinner reception at a club, but they were an exception. Murad's family is sort of the same way with Masjid weddings and/or city hall weddings. Murad said his dad's wedding was the first formal wedding he attended. So, I think this will be a nice way for our families to vacation, meet each other and celebrate our marriage.
Our honeymoon: I'm so thankful that we get to take one, but it will be a long time coming! Murad and I decided to go to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. woo-hoo! We originally planned to go in August of 09, but we're thinking of going on our one year anniversary, spring break '10. Why? Well we have a lot to do in '09. My brother graduates in May, Abby will be down with us for the majority of the summer, Murad needs to take summer classes and prep for the GRE. Right now, our priority, of course, is Murad's school, so we figure the honeymoon can take a back seat. Plus, this allows us to make sure everything for the wedding is paid off and that we have money left over to pay for his tests and grad school applications. We can save slowly during the school year for the honeymoon.
I need to get off my butt and go work-out, grocery shop and CLEAN! Then maybe start making invitations....

Miserable
I've been thinking a lot lately about my spiritual gifts. I need to get a lot more involved in church, but I feel like I have no time. Thinking about this made me reexamine my career. This has been the worst year by far. I have work I should be doing right now, but I thought I better clear my head before I begin. I know the fall is always crazy, but seriously IT SUCKS! I'm seriously questioning whether or not I can stay in this profession. I just need some sort of reality check. Someone needs to say one of two things to me:
1. "Ashlea, you're an amazing teacher and you would be silly to leave this rewarding profession. Things WILL get better."
2. "Ashlea, you have so many other talents. Why aren't in another profession that can offer you so much more growth"
The question is, what can I do besides teach? I love teaching, but I do not love all the administrative stuff I have to do. Some of it is mandated by the state of Texas, so I can't not do it. I'm also questioning why I'm going to school to be an administrator. That would be such a stressful job. Even if I was an elementary school principal (which is what I would do), it would be stressful.
I don't know if I will leave the teaching profession, but it just felt good to get that off my chest. I just want things to get better. I want there to be a light at the end of this dark tunnel.

Updates!
Wow, it's been so long since I posted. Well my car is driving like usual. No broken windows or stolen satellite radios...thank God!
School is going great. I do feel like I've gotten meaner this year. Not on purpose, maybe just with experience. For example, yesterday in class my student whispered to me, "Miss, your fiance is CUTE!" I just started laughing as I was passing out their papers. Another student across the room goes, "Wow! Miss Woodard actually smiles." Yep. I guess I need to smile a bit more, but I think I'll wait...
Wedding plans are going great! Murad picked out his tuxes although I haven't seen them. He's going to surprise me. We're taking a little break from wedding planning. I was just getting a little stressed out from it all and it was causing stress and chaos between us. Now, I'm starting my wedding day diet. Even though my wedding isn't until March, my mom wants to have my dress done in December. I'm having the hardest time losing the last five pounds. They are just so stubborn! So now it's serious calorie counting and exercise. That's how I lost all of my weight two years ago. I also cut out alcohol..except for "special" occasions! No more wine with dinner...
So now I'm just picking up little things here and there. For example, when I see a 50% off coupon for Michael's I'll go and pick up ribbon and stuff, but nothing major. I also found a lady who is selling me 67 votive candles for $10.00. They're slightly used, but will work perfectly for our wedding. I also ordered my veil today. I was so against having one and then I decided I needed one. However, I was NOT going to spend more than $30...impossible, right? No! I decided to go the nontraditional route and buy a birdcage veil. It's so cute. My mom is going to add rhinestones to it. And, it was only....$15. $15 compared to the $200 veils that some people buy to wear for just the ceremony. Now, I need to find bubbles and bubble guns. I think I'll just buy four or five bubble guns (one for each of the honor attendants and one for each of the flower girls). I think this will be cute for our grand exit! I'm getting excited that it's only six and a half months away!
Well in other planning news, after researching a bunch of options, Murad decided that getting a Ph.D in Social Work would not be a good move. It's more of a lateral career move and the amount of student loan debt he would incur would not be worth it. He sort of found out that a Ph.D in Social Work is only good if you want to do research. So, he's going to apply for a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology which would allow him to do research and work as a therapist. So far he's narrowed it to two schools to which he definitely wants to apply: UT and KU. We're also researching options in Dallas, but there aren't really any here. In addition, he'll apply at other schools too. I'm really excited about this change. I think this allows us more security, as a psychologist would make more money than a social worker. I hate to focus on the money, but there is more funding for psychology programs than social work programs. Even though he has some connections to people who know about social work funding, they aren't secure.
He also shows great promise as a psychologist. His first degree was in psychology, he used to run group therapy sessions and his current minor (with his second bachelor's) is in psychology. Whether or not we stay in Dallas, move to Austin or Kansas City, I welcome the change and am excited to see where the Lord takes us. We are so blessed to have found each other and I think that no matter where we are, we'll be happy as long as we're together...with Maya and Sampson, of course! I think ultimately this will allow him to pursue his interests while still doing what's best for our family, which is always his first priority. I'm so happy!
Of course why am I happy...because we have a plan! I'm all about planning. Planning weddings and planning life...but I know the best things do come when I don't plan. That's how I met my wonderful man. I couldn't have "planned" a better man!

Cool vs. Not Cool
Here are some cool things
1. Organization: I feel so much more organized this school year! I love it. My classroom is so cute. Everything is all daisies and sunflowers (red & yellow) with a little a hint of Kansas (KU posters). I even have a little vase on my peer conference table that is filled with (fake) purple daisies. I organized all my file cabinets. I have a new system for turning in work. I have all my special ed, tutoring, ESL, parent files organized where I can get to them! I love being organized!
2. My new mentee and my old one. Well, I'll talk about my old one first. She's not old because she's at least two years younger than me. This is her second year teaching and she and her husband are welcoming baby Wyatt around Thanksgiving. She is the BEST reading teacher around. Her students are so lucky to have her.
My new mentee is Emily. She graduated from OU with a degree in English (yeah, another out of state girl!) She is awesome. Great go-getter attitude and strong work ethic. I think we'll be great friends and I think she'll be a great teacher!
3. New Jersey- We bought our tickets for Thanksgiving. I can't wait!
4. My fiance. He truly is my partner in life. I hope I impact his life as much as he has impacted mine. This weekend he was truly my savior. When my car got broken into he took care of everything. He always has my back.
5. my students- I'm so excited for this school year. My kids are so little and scared. That will all change...
Not Cool
1. Waking up at 6:45am yesterday to walk my dogs and discovering that someone broke my car window and stole the XM radio Murad bought for my birthday. NOT F-ing cool at ALL!
2. Having a $500 deductible on my insurance. NOT F-ing cool. My wonderful fiance paid for it all and everything was fixed when I got home this afternoon. Today was his day off and he did it all for me! He cussed the insurance people out too. Thanks, babe!
3. Not cool: mean teachers. I love the teachers with whom I work....most of them. I don't appreciate being called a "pretty girl" in a condescending way. I will tell you to your face and if you don't like it tough shit. I also don't like it when experienced teachers try to make new teachers feel like crap.
That's pretty much it for my cool vs. not cool list! Enjoy

Summer is officially over!
Well, my blog title sums it up. Summer is officially over. What does that mean?
1. Abby is gone -- we took her back to Kansas Tuesday. Being a mom is hard work, but I really enjoyed it with Abby. While I'm definitely not ready for kids yet, I would love to have Abby here more. My reasons are selfish mostly. I love having another girl in the house. I love having a singing partner and swimming partner. Abby was like my little buddy this past month and I'll truly miss her. We did have some rough spots and she had to see mean Mama Ashlea a handful of times, but I think she enjoyed herself down here in Dallas. It also allowed Murad and I to see that we have the same parenting expectations. I can't wait until we have kids of our own, because he will be an excellent father. He already is!
2. I have to limit my cussing to a few hours a day. For those of you who know me well, I do have the mouth of a sailor. For those of you who don't know me well, I hope I didn't shatter your image of me. It's cool though. I'm pretty sure I can make it through the day without slipping.
3. I went back to school today. Well today wasn't my official back to school day, but I went to meet with my new mentee and work in my classroom. I was a little pissed when I found out that someone took down all my notes from former students. They also took down all the notes of other teachers in my hallway as well. Jerks. Thanks for stealing my memories! Thanks for stealing the reason I get up each day to teach!
4. I'm going to be busy again. Not like I wasn't this summer, but at least my schedule will be semi-regular. Here are the list of things I'll be doing this year: co-sponsoring NJHS, chairing the Student Assistance Team and thus Red Ribbon Week, tutoring, mentoring one new teacher and one returning teacher, finishing up my master's, being a loving fiance, being a good mother to my dogs and GETTING MARRIED! Oh yeah, did I mention I'm doing a half-marathon in December?
No seriously, I am. I decided I need to get motivated to lose weight. Not that I am overweight, but honestly, I'm just not happy with how I look. Two years ago I successfully lost over twenty pounds and now I'm struggling just to lose the five that crept back on me. So, when my friend Melanie told me about the half-marathon, I decided to pounce on the opportunity. That means a new work-out routine which includes morning runs with Sam & Maya. Luckily, it's going to get cooler, so it'll be easier. Plus, I think my friend Allison is coming down from Kansas to run the full marathon, so it'll be great. I'm sure Murad will run the entire marathon too, but he'll kick our butts. Plus, I only plan to walk/run it not run the entire thing.
Anyways. Fall is upon us. I'm looking forward to a new school year and new experiences. I'm so thankful for all the blessings we have received thus far. Here's to a great 2008-2009!

Abby Update #2
Well today was Abby's third day at summer camp. I think she really is enjoying it. She LOVES the fact that she gets to swim each day. She's getting so tan and her hair is so light. She looks absolutely stunning. She got a little owie today at camp, but she's a trooper and wears her bandage with pride.
I think the camp is a little bit of culture shock for her. There are a lot of kids at camp compared to at her school in Meade. I think Murad said there are only 13 kids in her kindergarten class (I'd love to teach a class of only 13 kids!) . There is also a lot more diversity here. We chose the City of Richardson as her day camp because we really wanted to expose her to kids from all sorts of backgrounds. Richardson is a property rich district (damn Robin Hood laws), but we have students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. However, Richardson does have high standards of excellence in academics compared to most districts of similar backgrounds:
"A July 20, 2008 article in The Dallas Morning News reported on TAKS scores for area school districts and included an evaluation of the results. The following is an excerpt from that article.
"Pulling meaning or conclusions from the Dallas area's state testing results can be difficult. Our evaluation of the 2008 TAKS scores revealed these highlights
"Exceeding expectations
"Last year, Richardson ISD won accolades for exceeding expectations in a district that serves many poor students. This year, the district continues to show that trend.More than 34,000 students were enrolled in Richardson this past school year, and nearly half were considered poor. When compared with districts with similar demographics, such as Mesquite, Carrollton-Farmers Branch and Garland, Richardson students usually scored higher. Conversely, Richardson students do as well or slightly better than students in some wealthier school districts. For example students' math and reading scores in certain grades were comparable to students' scores in Plano, McKinney and Lewisville.
(sorry I had to brag on my school district)
So, as you can see Richardson really is a great place not only for me as a teacher, but for the students. I think Abby is going to gain more than she realizes by attending day camp here. She's exposed to so much. I think traveling to different places is the best gift parents can give to their children.
Well, as any mother, I do worry about her. On the first day of camp she told us that a boy was bullying her. "What'd he say, Abby?" inquired Murad. "Well, he said Hannah Montana can't sing good, but I know she can. He also said I can't do karate, but I can." Whew. Imagine our relief to find out it wasn't real bullying, but just healthy competition!
Today she went to Celebration Station and the movies and had a blast. She has two more days of camp this week and she starts a new camp next Monday. This weekend we'll probably take the dogs to the dog park and also get her hair cut. Her bangs are way too long. I can barely see her beautiful eyes!

summer is slipping away....

So, I will be posting a rather educational post on my blog this week. (just to warn you avid readers). I have to do it for my grad school class.
It's weird. I didn't think I would learn so much in my grad school classes, but I have. At first I didn't know if I wanted to actually be a principal, but now I'm sure of it. I think I will miss being in the classroom, but I think I will enjoy the leadership position. The extra $15,000 a year doesn't hurt either. However the work will be difficult. It's definitely not a cushy job, but I enjoy a challenge. In fact, I'm even considering getting a doctorate in education (Ed.D or Ph.D), so that I can be a superintendent. I'm "CONSIDERING " it. I'll probably wait until Murad gets his Ph.D. We'll see though. More student loans, but hey an education is worth it, right?

ail. people are already receiving it. hopefully, liking it? I'm so mad because I discovered an easier way to make them yesterday. And I could've added more things to it. Oh well, I got them sent out and there isn't anything I can do about i now. Oh and how awesome am I that I sent my mom's friend a save the date envelope without a save the date enclosed. Genius! I think the invitations I'm making will be very nice though. I'm so excited to do those!

I'm back and actors i loathe
I'm back from Austin! I got back this afternoon. The trip was fun, but it would've been more fun if I wouldn't have been alone. I did make a point to venture outside of my hotel each night. I even ate in a restaurant by myself! I've never done that. It was an experience! The trip was pretty suite...(haha, get it?) I did have a large suite all to myself. I had three sinks, two tvs and three rooms (if you include the bathroom) all to myself. I felt a little selfish! I ate like a queen as well. Embassy Suites provides made to order breakfast each day, and the lunch they provided each day was very filling! Since it was an all expense paid trip, I made sure to eat well for dinner.
No, but seriously the trip was good. I worked with other Language Arts teachers, as well as special education teachers and life skills teachers to review the state assessment for 6-8th grade Reading for students with cognitive disabilities. I learned so much from the meeting. I learned what those teachers must go through each day to provide effective instruction for their students while assessing them. I have so much admiration for them. I also learned some effective strategies for my special education students as well. Most importantly, I got to meet some really cool teachers. We all were from different parts of the state, but we worked together to create something meaningful for students.
I will say that I was the youngest teacher there. That was a little intimidating, I will admit. I got over it though and didn't let it stop me from sharing my ideas.
Okay, so now to the real meat of the post. Last week Murad and I went to see The Hulk. Edward Norton stars in it and after we left I started thinking of how great of an actor he is. Then I started thinking about actors I loathe (I won't use the word "hate." I detest the word "hate."). One actor popped into my head immediately: KEANU REEVES. Oh my goodness, how much does he suck? Murad thinks he's a good actor, but he's not. He's horrible! Name one movie that he enhances....see you couldn't do it! Here's another actor I hate: KIRSTEN DUNST. She needs to quit acting and get a real job. Maybe you'd like to share some actors you loathe, too. Come on. You'll feel better once you share!

Scared and life
So, I leave for Austin tomorrow. I'm terrified. I don't know why, it's just a three-hour jaunt down I-35. I'm just nervous that I won't be what they expected. What if I suck? I guess my appearance makes people think I'm younger than I am (and the fact that I use the word "suck") and I'm afraid they won't take me seriously. For example, today at the bank the kid behind the counter goes, "you're a teacher" (I was depositing a reimbursement check). Flattered at first, but annoyed that I look so young. Oh well, no fears, right?
Since I'm on a roll, I might as well bitch and moan some more...why is everything so expensive?
My car engine coolant needed to be flushed to the tune of $167. I also need to have a new fan belt in six months for another $250. AWESOME! So excited for that!
Today, I was researching vacation bible schools for Abby when she comes down, and I just happened to peruse the pre-school section of the church websites. Even though kids are a long ways away, it never hurts to be prepared, plus I need to find a church home. Murad and I talked about how we want our children to go to a Lutheran pre-school so they get a good foundation in Christian Education (the kids will go to Mosque on Fridays), top notch curriculum and they also have Spanish built into the curriculum. However, never in a million years did I think it would cost $400/month for pre-school. I remember Pre-school. It was a lot of fun, but not $400 fun. For $400 a month my kid better find a cure for cancer or end world hunger. I really hope we don't have twins, "Timmy you're going to sit in front of the TV while your brother goes to school. He showed more potential."
Even though the cost of things is a little disheartening, it did open up some dialogue between Murad and I. We've already talked about the basics of starting the Campbell family. We both agree on three children, although Murad did tell me that if I didn't produce boys we'd have to keep trying until we got one (yeah, right). We both agree that we want to wait five years to have a family, although if the Lord blesses us prematurely we will be happy. However, we had to resign the dream of a home in Dallas, *sigh*

Originally, we wanted to buy a little starter home in Dallas. Something we could live in until we have kids, but then we realized it makes more since to buy our "second" home (aka the one where we'll spend the majority of our married lives). However, a big home in Dallas is just not affordable on my little salary, Murad's tiny salary and his student loans. So, we've resigned to move to the SUBURBS. It'll be good for us and we won't move for a year and a half or so. We'll need to save a little more money because a big home puts us just outside of our price range, but ultimately it's the right decision. Better schools for our kids and that's what is most important. We just really love living in Dallas. Even now it seems like such a drive to go out in downtown or uptown that I can't imagine what it'll be like in the suburbs. The only bright side is that we'll be close to an outlet mall! There is a light at the end of the tunnel....
Speaking of shopping... I found my wedding shoes. I wanted something a little different and funky, but I didn't want a heel that was too high!

What do you think? $46.00 isn't bad compared to the $98 "bridal" shoes bridal salons sell! I guess it is possible to have great wedding style during a recession!

I have a cold in June
How the hell is that possible? At first, I thought it was allergies. I spent all day dusting on Friday. But, no. Each day since then I have awoken to a sore throat and a runny nose. So annoyed. Oh well. I'm just sitting on the couch watching TV. The weather outside is bad today, so I'm not missing any quality pool time.
Well, after my mental breakdown last week things have gotten better. I thought I was the victim of identity theft. Luckily, that's not the case, however, I have to go through an annoying process of getting it taken off my report with one of the credit bureaus. Not my fault, but I still have to do all the freaking work. Even though my credit is still good, I don't feel comfortable buying a home until this is all taken care of, so no house just yet! I'm not as sad about it as I used to be.
Murad got a new job! Yeah! It's a job he really wanted. He will be working at a hospital (not my ideal job). This will be so great for him! Woo-hoo.
This week I've been really regretting having a long engagement. We've been to a couple weddings in the last few weeks. While they were each fun and unique, I'm kind of regretting planning a wedding. I thought having a long engagement and the wedding we always wanted would be perfect, but right now all I want is to be his wife. All I want is for somone to call me, "Mrs Campbell." All I want is to proudly say, "this is my husband." I know my mind will change. I guess I'm just getting stressed out with all the wedding stuff. And, I just really want to be his wife.
I practice writing my future name all the time and I just realized I haven't decided what my new name will be. I have four choices
1. First Middle Maiden (99% sure I will not do this)
2. First Middle Last
3. First Maiden Last (maiden would be my new middle)
4. First Middle Maiden Last (no hyphen, I would have two middle names)
Honestly, it's between #2 & #4. I'm leaning more towards # 4 just because I can't imagine Woodard not being part of my name. Ultimately, I will be First Last. I'll probably never sign my name as #4, but it will be on my driver's license. We'll see. I have nine months to decide.
Nine months....eek. Yesterday one of my bridesmaids went with me to look at bridesmaid dress colors. I wanted to make sure the champagne would look good with sky blue. The sky blue they had was more violet than blue, so I decided to go with periwinkle (which is the original color I wanted). So, the bridesmaids will wear champagne dresses with a periwinkle sash. My flower girls will wear periwinkle dresses. The groomsmen, ushers and dads will wear black tuxes with periwinkle vests and ties. I think it will look great! I hope!
This weekend I also got information about hotels, pastors and a DJ. I'm so on the ball! Next week: meet with potential pastors, pick out tuxes and register for gifts at one store. Ask how much I've done on my grad school project this weekend: Notta! Okay, I lied I worked on it for a bit. They moved the due date back and I've been procrastinating since they did that. I'll get it done, but it may be at the eleventh hour!
Okay, well back to TV watching!

It's a wonderful life!
Why? Because the school year is coming to an end! Six weeks left of school for me! Also, the Campbell-Woodard family got some wonderful news today.
1. Murad is now the new president of the Social Work Student Association! Woo-hoo! I'm so excited for him. This is such a wonderful opportunity for him. He's already a natural leader and so outspoken! He's going to do an awesome job! Not to mention what this will do for his resume. This will really boost his application for grad school. He also is presenting on a panel on Muslims in Texas. The person in charge of the panel really likes him and told him that he most likely could pursue a Ph.D in Social Work for free if he applies for scholarships! Even more good news! Even though he initially wanted to pursue a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology, this one will still allow him to reach his goals in life and did I mention it may be FREE! Woo-hoo!
2. I have been selected to serve on a committee that develops the alternative state assessments for Texas! I get to go to Austin for free for a few days. I'll stay at a lavish hotel (okay, so it may be like a Holiday Inn, but it's free). I'm so excited. The English curriculum director for my district nominated me back in the fall. She told me there'd be a chance that I'd get it and a chance I wouldn't. I just feel this is an awesome opportunity for me to grow as a teacher and bring what I learn to my students. Not to mention that it will help my resume as well. However, my ultimate goal is to do what is best for the students! So exciting!
3. My future stepdaughter ROCKS! Okay, so she got into a little fight this week. I just think it shows how tough she is! She is so her father's daughter!
I was on the phone with her and she goes, "Ashlea, can you come to Meade and then I can come back to Dallas with you. I'll pack my bathing suit and we can go swimming." Melted my heart. I really hope she can come visit us this summer. Murad's mom may come too. I would love it if they were all here at the same time!

Maya, the duck hunter
So Miss Maya Leigh Campbell caught a duck today. Yes, a duck! Imagine that. Murad called me today to tell me that she caught the duck. The duck was pretty bad after she caught it, but I think he lived. I wish I could've seen it. Murad was so proud of his little girl! She's quite the hunter. I always knew she would be. When we go outside, she also spots the squirrels and rabbits. Her little ears perk up and they turn. Too bad her brother can't follow in her footsteps. He's oblivious to anything that goes on around him. Big dogs bark at him and he doesn't care. Little dogs cower in his presence and he doesn't care. A rabbit will hop right in front of him and he is totally unphased by it! Oh, Sam! Ironically, the student from whom we bought Sampson and Maya told me today that Buddy (their father) caught a duck as well. He got out the picture on his school phone to show me (against school policy, may I add, but oh well).
So, the dreaded TAKS test is upon us! This year the stakes are higher. Special education scores count this year. 8th grade students have to pass in order to go onto high school. Luckily, I teach seventh grade, but my students are not only tested in reading, but writing as well. The writing portion is two part. Answering questions over revising and editing and writing a composition. So, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as the 7th grade students take the Writing test on Wednesday and the 8th grade students take the reading test. My kiddos will take the reading test in late April, so be thinking of that as well.
Well, this year I've had the opportunity to serve on the crisis intervention team. It's been stressful yet rewarding. One thing that I have become passionate about is alcohol and drug prevention. It's alarming how many students are affected by alcohol and drug abuse at this young age.
On April 19th, 2008 Murad and I, along with some of my National Junior Honor Society students and Sampson & Maya, will participate in Walk Like MADD. Walk Like MADD is a walk to raise money to create more educational opportunities for students to learn about the dangers of drinking and driving. I'm really excited about the walk. I did it last year with NJHS and had a blast. Now that I'm the chair of the crisis intervention team, I think it will have more meaning as well.
Since the purpose of the walk is to raise money, I'm going to put out that plug! If you'd like to donate money to support Murad or myself please visit www.stridesforchange.org You can click on make a donation and if you look for my name, Murad's name or the team name of Apollo NJHS, you can make a donation of whatever sum you'd like. All donations are greatly, greatly appreciated! You can also count them as a tax write-off. I also encourage you to become involved with MADD in your own community and participate in a walk if there is one near you! Okay, that's my whole plug! I'm done!

W's

Well the W's are woodard, weight loss, wedding, work and wonderful puppies!!!
Woodard
Well Woodard is my last name, so this is about me. I've officially been twenty-six for over a week now! Last weekend, my friends Christina and Evan came down from OKC to visit. They brought along their dog, Lucy to play with Sam and Maya. We had a great time. We ordered pizza and watched the KU game and then we went to eat at Benihana's http://www.benihana.com/. It was great. Murad ended up getting me XM radio for my car and Seasons 1 & 2 of The Office. I love my XM. At first, I thought XM seemed like a luxury, but it really is a necessity! And I love The Office. We've been watching it everynight this week.
Weight Loss
Okay, so I've really tried to start the weight loss process early, but it has been hard. Over Christmas I gained five pounds. Doesn't seem like a lot, but it's a lot easier to gain than lose. So, I've been working out when I can. I try to go to the gym at least three times a week. Well this week, I had a miraculous weight loss experience. Okay, so maybe not miraculous. However, I lost three pounds in four days and it's all thanks to my puppies. Walking them is an exercise, mostly because they fight the entire walk. I never expected it to impact my weight loss though. My arms actually have some definition now. So, I now have my own 40 lb. weights!!!!
Wedding
Well we've found the place to hold our wedding! It is absolutely beautiful. I've put some pictures up of the ballroom. The ladies who run the place are two sisters, and they're absolutely great! They're so willing to help us and are doing a lot of things for us free of charge. It's almost like they're our wedding coordinators. The thing we love about this place as that we can bring in our own caterer and alcohol, so we will be able to save a ton of money that way. We also like the fact that the facility is ours beginning the day before our wedding. This will be great and allow my mother and I to do a lot of DIY projects and set it up the day before. I'm so excited and so if my fiance and, of course, my mom!
Work
Work is great, but it's getting a little hectic. The TAKS writing assessment is in exactly one month! I'm a little nervous, but we're getting ready to start a big writing unit. We've got some fun hands-on writing activities planned for the kids. They're all capable of being excellent writers, but they just need to believe in themselves as writers! Trying to convince them they're writers is the hard part. After the writing TAKS I'm taking a little vacation to Atlanta to see my friend, Himee and then after that is spring break! Yay!!!
Wonderful Puppies
Sampson and Maya started puppy training class yesterday. While I don't really like the instructor, training class couldn't have come at a better time. Sampson ate an entire bag of jelly beans and Maya tore up all our paper towels. When we went to training class though, we realized that our dogs are pretty good dogs. Murad and I were by far the youngest owners and Murad was the only guy there. Some of the things they were explaining we have already done with Sam and Maya. Sam and Maya are just so smart. Sometimes, I can't believe it. They're so cuddly and fun!
I guess we'll see how they do next week at training class!

Good News
Well this week has been full of adjustments for me! I went back to work on Monday. It wasn't too bad, but with ending the six weeks after Christmas, I had so many failing students. I had to scramble to get them to come in and make up their work, redo quizzes and tests and basically pass! Some of course didn't take my generosity and they're still failing.
Well Murad got some excellent news. First, he is officially a Texan and he doesn't have to pay a ridiculous amount to go to school here. Yeah! Also, his professor called him a few days ago to tell him that she was going to nominate him for National Association of Social Work representative. If he wins, he'll represent his school in the NASW. He'll also get to go to Austin to attend legislature meetings. I'm not sure what else it entails, but it sounds like some cool stuff. I'm so proud of him. He's worked so hard this past semester and it all paid off. He got a 3.5 and made some great connections within his school.
We're still looking at houses. Murad got laid off back in October so we've just been living off of my income and his student loans. Once he finds a job though, I feel that we can seriously start looking at a house.
Let's see what else. We're going to look at our first choice for the ceremony/reception this weekend. It's in Uptown Dallas and it's called City Place. Last weekend I spent like two hours making a spreadsheet of all the wedding packages I received. Then, I compared costs between all of them. Some were outrageously expensive! Like $3000 just to rent the room and then you pay like $50 per person just for food. Too much! Oh well, you can check out City Place at http://www.chgcityplace.com/

Zea and my doggy is sick
So last night my LAD girls and I went out to Thanksgiving dinner. We went to Zea Woodfire Grill in Plano. My friend's husband's uncle owns it and it is so good. It's like Southern food mixed with Thai food. Lots of good, yummy food. I had the Herb 'n Garlic Rotisserie chicken with Thai green beans. It was so good. I topped it off with a glass of wine and an apple crisp!! http://www.zeawoodfiregrill.com/
So today I woke up to doggy diarrhea. Yes, Sampson is sick. I spent my morning cleaning up doggy diarrhea and then I turn around and there was more doggy diarrhea. Murad came home to it too. Gross. He's spit up a few times today too. At first I thought it was because we changed his food to canned food, but then I remember yesterday he picked up what I thought was a stick. As I reached down to take it out of his mouth I realized it was a piece of petrified dog poop. Ooh gross! So that may be the cause of it. Who knows!
It was not how I wanted to start my day. After that we had a lock down at school. Very scary. There was a shooting outside of our school, so we all had to remain hidden in our classrooms. The gunman wasn't on school property and it wasn't a school related incidence, but it was nearby. I spent an hour huddled with seventeen thirteen year olds in the corner of my room. Not fun at all, but at least we're all safe. I have that for which to be thankful.
Still a good day though. I had an awesome tutoring session with some of my low students after school. They really seemed to get the material this time.
Retiring for tonight and preparing for another day!

My Job
I don't think I can accurately sum up what I do on a daily basis to anyone. It's not just part teaching and part paperwork; it's part everything...
This week was Red Ribbon Week. It was my first year as the coordinator and while I made tons of mistakes it went very well. However, I was exhausted everyday after school. Everyday I immediately came home and changed into comfortable clothes, which is ironic because this was the only week we could wear jeans to work! So by comfortable clothes, I mean pajamas.
Red Ribbon was a lot of fun for the kids and a big headache for the teachers, I'll admit. One of the greatest things it did bring though was healing.
This week we showed a slideshow about the Student Assistance Team (which I lead). We just wanted to let students know we're out there and we care. We help students with all kind of problems. While we've had the Student Assistance Team in our school, this is the first year we've been this visible. After we showed the slideshow we had some students who were visibly upset, remembering what happened last year. However, one of them said, "if only we had this last year."
We had three referrals just in this week. And while it means more paperwork for me and my team, it also means more help for our kids. It was good for me today just to sit and talk to a student. We just talked for about 20 minutes and it was great. Don't know if it made a difference in her life, but it did in mine. I think we need to take more time just to talk to our students. We need to get to know them.
I love my job. Even with all the paperwork, annoying parents, immature kids, and my low paycheck, I still love teaching!
This week was Red Ribbon Week. It was my first year as the coordinator and while I made tons of mistakes it went very well. However, I was exhausted everyday after school. 8 weeks

My little Sampson is growing up so fast. He's already 8 weeks old. I'm excited for him to get big, but I still like having a little puppy. I hope he doesn't grow too fast. Time for shots this week and then time to make sure he doesn't become a daddy! Murad and i aren't ready for a granddoggies.
Well, next week is Red Ribbon Week at school. A little nervous, but I hope everything will go exactly how we planned. I have a great team, but you just never know.
Let's see what else. Wedding plans...hmmm...even though the wedding isn't for a while we have two potential wedding dates, a potential ceremony site, a potential reception site, and a definite photographer. We definitely want a small wedding (around 100 people or less) and we want a classy, fun Dallasy ( I know it's not a word) wedding for our close friends and family. Luckily, Murad and I have the same vision as far as colors, style and food. We definitely want good food for our guests and selves. However, we disagree on a lot of other things. I guess this is preparing us for marriage! My mom has been great. She has basically agreed to everything I want to do and she's come up with so many ideas to make it unique. After the first of the year, I plan to really start planning and setting things up, but for now I'll just read my bridal magazines and dream!

Back to School
Well, I've finally made it through almost my first two weeks of my third year of teaching. With all the mishaps that have happened, it's amazing I'm still alive to blog about it. Between not receiving my copies and taking on added responsibilities, I am a chicken with it's head cut off. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
My kids are amazing. I'm learning so much about them through their writing and personal portfolios. Some of them have the strangest sense of humor. Some of the things that come out of their mouths are so mature. Some of the things that come out of their mouths are a little too mature.
I also love my classroom this year. I feel like I finally have an organized system. I'm sure this will all be shot in a few weeks though! My room finally reflects my personality and I think it is a safe environment in which my children can learn.
On top of that I am really excited about my new responsibilities although I am not excited about the amount of work I will be doing outside of the office. I'm excited to take over as the Student Assistance Team leader. However, I do not know what this title entails. I'm ecstatic to continue working with the National Junior Honor Society and still working at the Writing Lab after school. In addition to that, I start Saturday School in two weeks. Although I'm not excited about waking up for work on a Saturday, it's only 4 weeks and I get paid $400. Plus, I think I'll learn a lot from the lessons that we teach and I can take that back to my kids at my school.
All in all, it will be a good year with good times. Oh did I mention I'm going back to school. AAAAHHHH!!!

Exactly one week!!!
Well, in exactly one week I will return to work. I can honestly say I'm looking forward to returning to work and I'm dreading it. I do like the feeling of busy. I enjoyed this summer, but after the writing project and summer school were over, I sort of lived in my pajamas. Now I'll be super busy and it will be super fun. I'm still the NJHS co-sponsor and now I'm the Student Assistance Team committee chair. In addition to that, I may return to school for another master's in administration.
Yeah, so about the master's in school administration. I think I'm going to do it! I still need to attend the informational meeting. Hopefully, they'll give me some course credit for my other master's degree. It just sucks because I really wanted to save some money, but I figure this is a great investment in the long run. I should do it now when I don't have kids. While I never saw myself as a principal, I do have a genuine interest in educational policy, especially the political issues of curriculum. I think this degree will help me secure a position at the central office in the future.
Okay, so why I'm dreading school. I'm dreading it because it means I won't have a choice of how to use my ridiculous amounts of free time that summer awards. I've gotten used to going to the gym when nobody is there, reading books all day, writing ridiculously long emails, blogging, and spending tons of quality time with my bookie! I think that is what I'll miss the most. Yesterday we just sat in our pajamas all day and watched movies. It was so great! I made a nice dinner for us, too. Today we're taking a little trip to Denton, so that I can see his school. Our last big quality time date will be this weekend when we hit up Reunion Tower for his birthday dinner. Aaah, bliss!
What can I say. I have a good life.
Good-bye to summer '07

Life Choices
So my life is going very well. I have a wonderful boyfriend and I'm finally in a place where I'm financially comfortable and can pay back my parents for buying me a car and pay off my credit card debt. Then Richardson springs this wonderful opportunity on me. They are doing a partnership with Lamar University in which teachers can get their master's degree in curriculum&instruction or school administration. I already have a master's degree in curriculum & instruction, but the school administration degree might be beneficial. I've never really thought about being a principal, but it would be a great thing.
Plus, the degree is only $5000 for Richardson teachers. So cheap. Richardson would front the money, but I'd have to pay back the money through payroll deductions. I really wouldn't be able to be debt free if I did the program, but it would set me up to make more $$ in the future. Decisions, decisions....
Any thoughts?
